Should I turn my computer off when I leave work?

Although we applaud those individuals who are trying to conserve energy, we recommend that you log off and put your computer in sleep mode instead of turning it off when you leave work at the end of the day. Security scans and software updates are often pushed out by the University at times when the computers are least likely to be used, in order to prevent these activities from slowing down your computer when you are trying to work. Logging off of your computer and putting it on sleep mode uses very little energy, and you can always power off your machine when you are gone for longer stretches of time, such as breaks or long weekends. Just be aware that the next time you turn your computer on, it may take a few extra minutes to work normally, since it is spending those extra minutes making sure your system is secure.
